What is a MakerSpace, and Why Does Beaufort County Library Have One?

Our MakerSpace is a community workshop where anyone can swing by to tinker, build, and try out new tech. It’s all about building a "maker mindset,” moving from just using stuff to actually creating it.


Tech, high-end software, and specialized gadgets get expensive. Most of us can't just buy every cool tool we want to try out! That’s why the St. Helena Branch of the Beaufort County Library offers this space as a free, shared resource for everyone. Whether you're working on a fun weekend project, picking up new job skills, or just playing around with new tech, you’re welcome here.


What Can You Do at the St. Helena MakerSpace?


We’ve got a mix of workspaces, production gear, and tech set up and ready to go:


  • The Mac Lab: If visual art and design are your thing, this is your spot. You can edit pictures and design graphics in Adobe Photoshop, build 3D objects with Adobe Substance 3D, or experiment with simple AI photo tools like Image Playground.


  • Video & Media Production: Every iMac comes with iMovie and GarageBand. They’re user-friendly programs, whether you're putting together family videos, editing clips for social media, or making a short film.


  • The Sound Lab: Want to start a podcast, record an interview, or lay down some beats? Head to the Sound Lab. With our mics, recording gear, and a few quick YouTube tutorials, you'll get the hang of audio editing in no time.


  • Electronics & Coding: Curious about how gadgets work? Grab a Raspberry Pi, an Arduino board, or a breadboard and start tinkering. You can learn the basics, like getting an LED light to blink using a battery and wire, or dive into building your own custom electronics.


  • 3D Design: If you're new to 3D modeling, tools like Tinkercad make it super easy and fun (it's drag and drop, like playing with blocks, and totally kid-friendly!). If you want something more, we also have more advanced software that lets you design complex, professional models.

You can use the MakerSpace gear whenever the library is open. But if you want to hang out and learn alongside others, come to the St. Helena Branch Library MakerSpace Group every Wednesday at 4:00 PM.


It’s not a class, it’s just a place where you can share ideas, help each other, and work on fun stuff together. Tweens, teens, adults, and seniors are all welcome; you don't need any prior experience at all to join in.
