Happy Freedom Day! Happy Juneteenth! Happy Teenth!

Each year on June 19, communities across the nation gather to celebrate Juneteenth, a day that honors freedom, perseverance, and the continuing journey toward a more perfect union. While Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021, it has been a cherished and meaningful celebration in Black communities for more than 160 years [1].

The story of Juneteenth begins on June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of legalized slavery in Texas through General Order No. 3 [2]. The news came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation [2]. For those who received this long-awaited announcement, it marked a moment of hope, liberation, and new beginnings.

Over the years, Juneteenth celebrations have evolved into vibrant community gatherings featuring family reunions, church services, parades, music, food, educational programs, and opportunities to reflect on our nation's history. In 1979, Texas became the first state to officially recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday [3]. More than four decades later, on June 17, 2021, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, making June 19 a federal holiday [4].

This year, the Bluffton Branch Library invites the community to learn, reflect, and celebrate through two special Juneteenth programs:
