International Artist Alex Palkovich Exhibits at St. Helena Branch Library
World renowned artist Alex Palkovich has chosen the St. Helena branch of the Beaufort County Library System to display his award-winning bronze sculpture “On the Way to Market.” This 44” tall bronze sculpture depicts an African-American woman with a basket full of vegetables balanced adeptly on her head. The sculpture illustrates the heritage of African descendants in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. This work has already won the 80th Annual National Sculpture Society Exhibition People’s Choice Award.
“We are honored to have an exceptionally talented international artist such as Alex to display his work in Beaufort. This statue in particular is a great fit for the St. Helena branch library as it reflects the heritage of St. Helena Island and the surrounding area,” stated Beaufort County Library Director, Ray McBride.
Alex was born in the trans-Carpathian Mountains, now part of the Ukraine. As a mechanical engineer, he managed companies in the design and production of advanced medical equipment in Mexico, the United State, Israel, and the UK. As his business career flourished, so did his artistic career, as he sculpted and exhibited throughout the world prior to retiring as a CEO with GE to become a full-time sculptor.
Alex is a member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, serving 3 years as Vice President, the Oxford Art Society, the American Medallic Sculpture Association (AMSA), and in 2010, became the first elected member of the National Sculpture Society from South Carolina. He has won numerous awards for his sculpture including a British Design Award in 1987, a national award from the American Institute of Commemorative Art in 2009 for his installation in Florence Veterans Park, and a People’s Choice Award from the National Sculpture Society in 2013. He currently lives in South Carolina with his wife, Aggie, and his much loved Kerry Blue Terrier.
