Donate a new or like-new baby’s or child’s book to the library during December 2018 and your library fines* will be forgiven (up to $20 per card).

Books will be donated to the Born to Read program to support their goal of promoting early literacy to parents and children in Beaufort County.

*Forgiveness applies only to fines from overdue items and to Beaufort County Library cardholders only. Donation must be in new or like-new condition (please bring to any Beaufort County Library location).

The Beaufort County Library system is pleased to announce that the Friends of the Hilton Head Library organization is the recipient of the South Carolina Library Association (SCLA) Friend of Libraries Award.

The award recognizes outstanding service to a library or libraries, which has furthered the expansion of library services in South Carolina.

The Friends of the Hilton Head Library received the award in recognition of their contributions to the Hilton Head Library and dedication to supporting quality library service to their community. Library Director Ray McBride, at the recent South Carolina Library Association conference, accepted the award on the Friends' behalf.

The Beaufort County Library system would like to congratulate the Friends of the Hilton Head Library on their special honor. The Library is grateful for their hard work and dedication.

Beaufort County Library Director Ray McBride is this year’s winner of the South Carolina Library Association (SCLA) Hall of Fame Award!

This award is given to recognize significant career accomplishments and contributions to the development of library and information services in South Carolina, as well as leadership and service contributing to the advancement of the goals and objectives of the South Carolina Library Association. Mr. McBride is the first individual to receive this new award, which recognized his 20 years as a professional librarian in South Carolina, including:

Three years as Systems Administrator in Darlington County Library SystemSeven years as Operations and Technology Manager in Greenville County Library System (12 libraries)Six years as Director of Libraries in Florence County Library SystemThree and one half years as Director of Beaufort County Library System

Mr. McBride also received the SCLA Librarian of the Year award in 2009 and the Outstanding Individual Award from the Friends of South Carolina libraries in 2016.

The Friends of the Beaufort Library will hold a public art installation celebration at the Saint Helena Branch Library on Saturday, October 27, at 2 pm. “On the Way To the Market,” a National Sculpture Society award-winning bronze sculpture by Alex Palkovich, captures an African-American woman gracefully transporting a basket of vegetables on her head.

The sculpture was purchased by the Friends to commemorate the history of the African descendants in the Lowcountry, and will be a permanent installation at the library. The sculptor will be on hand to provide background about his work and to answer questions. Refreshments will be served, and all ages are invited to attend this special event.

Beaufort County Library Director, Ray McBride, initiated the sculpture’s display several months ago, and the community responded by starting a fundraiser to provide a permanent home for it in the St. Helena Library. The Friends’ Board of Directors voted this spring to allocate funds for the purchase, supporting the role of public art in important spaces like our public libraries. “This sculpture reflects our Lowcountry community, and the Library supports the community. They belong together,” said Friends President Carol Brown.

Award-winning sculptor Alex Palkovich was born in an area that is now part of the Ukraine. He studied to become a mechanical engineer and has worked in Mexico, Israel and the UK, as well as the U.S. Throughout his business career he sculpted and exhibited internationally, and upon retirement he turned exclusively to his art. Palkovich is a member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, the Oxford Art Society, the American Medallic Sculpture Society, and was elected the first South Carolina member of the National Sculpture Society in 2010. Gigantic Book Sale in Beaufort’s Waterfront Park

(BEAUFORT, SC) The Friends of the Beaufort Library, a non-profit supporting the Beaufort County Library branches North of the Broad River, will again hold its annual blow-out BOOK SALE including a Silent Auction the weekend of September 28-30 at the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park in downtown Beaufort.

Over 40,000 gently used books, music, movies and audiobooks will be available for sale at bargain prices – hardbacks are $2 and paperbacks are 50 cents or $1. This is an extraordinarily popular event proving that books are not obsolete. Book lovers of all stripes show up to scavenge for their favorites.

The first Friends book sale in 1987 produced $900 in book sales. Now, this fund-raiser generates half the Friends total income which goes right back to the Library – last year helping to renovate the first floor of the branch on Scott Street in downtown Beaufort.

Beaufort County Library Director, Ray McBride, said, “Friends' book sales help generate thousands of dollars each year to support quality adult and children’s programs and purchases of hundreds of new library materials for the library. The library is extremely grateful to the Friends volunteers who receive, sort, and pack these donated books and to the public who donates them. Through the hard work and dedication of the Friends of the Library, the residents of Beaufort County see a huge return on their donation.”

Another source of funds for the Friends is through Memberships, which start at $15. Members have early access to the Book Sale on Friday, September 28th, from 9am to 11am. Members can renew online or anyone can join at the gate Friday morning.

The sale is open to the public Friday from 11am to 6pm, Saturday from 9am to 6pm and Sunday from 10am to 4pm. In support of the upcoming Beaufort County ban on plastic bags, the Friends will offer paper bags, boxes and cloth totes for sale, but shoppers can bring their own bags.

A highlight of the sale is the Silent Auction of truly unique finds – 1st editions, artwork, and local treasures. Bidding will close on Saturday at 3pm. A list of the auction items is on the Friends website.

All sorts of books will be at the sale from cooking and gardening to the occult and metaphysical. Fiction and mystery are the largest and most popular categories. Rare and Collectible books include a large selection of local authors and topics.

Kinsey Baker, the Friends’ book expert personally examines every book donated. He notes that we received over 2,000 items this year from long time Friends’ volunteer, David Peterson – many detective novels from the 1930s through 1950s and over 500 books about sailing and sailboats. Another major donation was the collection from the estate of renowned local history and archeology buff, Robert Lafaye.

Book Sale Co-Chairs, Deb Chevas and Carter Hoyt, have recruited the Marines to help load and transport books to Waterfront Park. AMIKids will help with setup and closing. Boy Scouts will provide off-hours assistance. The Friends are also very grateful to the City of Beaufort and General Warehouse Company for their sponsorship.

Lolita Huckaby Watson, the Friends Volunteer Coordinator, is lining up over 100 volunteers to serve as cashiers, baggers, table managers and more. According to Lolita, “this is a huge community effort which benefits avid readers and everyone in Beaufort by ensuring our Library remains the best it can be.”

The Beaufort County Library to again offer local parents opportunity to “Borrow the Internet” from select library locations.

Northern Beaufort County parents of school-age children/teens can borrow from the library - for free - a portable device that provides access to internet. The intent of the program is to enable children or teens who otherwise wouldn’t have access to the internet an opportunity to complete their internet-based homework assignments from the comfort of their home.

Overview

Each mobile “SmartSpot” device uses cellular networks to create a personal broadband internet hotspot and provide portable, high-speed internet connectivity that can be shared between multiple users. Each device is filtered to provide access only to educational websites.

Beginning on Monday, August 13th, a limited number of devices will be available for checkout at the Beaufort, Lobeco, and St. Helena branch libraries.

New this year

The Library's Bookmobile will provide SmartSpot devices to select homework sites across the county, enabling multiple students to utilize the device simultaneously. This addition to previous years’ SmartSpot programs was made possible through funds provided by a grant from the South Carolina K-12 Technology Initiative, administered by the South Carolina State Library.

Each SmartSpot device is checked out to a customer’s library card for the academic year. Borrowers must have a current Beaufort County Library card in good standing. Devices are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Checkout is limited to one device per household.

Thank you to the Beaufort County School District and Sodexo Quality of Life Services for their dedication and support and for keeping young stomachs full this summer with Sodexo's Lowcountry Cruzer food truck. They provided over 3,000 free meals to children and teens this summer at our Beaufort, Lobeco, and St. Helena branch libraries. The program ended on Friday, July 20th. Things are a-changin' at the Beaufort Branch Library!

Over the past two years, the Beaufort Branch Library has received new carpeting, meeting room renovations, new service desks and furniture, and - finished just this week - renovations on a new staff work area.

These projects were made possible by the generosity and dedication of the Friends of the Beaufort Library. All proceeds earned by the Beaufort Friends from things like book sales and memberships are recycled back into various projects for the Beaufort, St. Helena, and Lobeco branch libraries.

Half Off Summer Reading!

The Friends of the Beaufort County Library announce a month-long half-price sale beginning June 1 at the downtown Scott St. location.

The Friends Book Store operates year round in support of library programs and resources, and offers almost-new condition books, DVDs and books on CD at community-pleasing prices.

Gift certificates and tote bags are also available, and make wonderful end-of-school gifts!

The Book Store is open during library hours, and all sales are cash or check only.

In June 2017, Beaufort County Council funded the first Library Bookmobile in 21 years. Based on the phenomenal success of this service to Beaufort County citizens in its first six-months of operation, the Friends of the Hilton Head Library decided that they would like to fund a second vehicle.

The Friends of Hilton Head Library Board of Directors worked with Library Director Ray McBride to discuss the feasibility of a second vehicle. After a quick study of the available data and discussions with Library Board of Trustees, Beaufort County Administration, and Beaufort County Council, it was decided that this was a fantastic opportunity.

The Friends of the Hilton Head Library agreed to fully fund the new vehicle ($150,000) if the Library system could fund the additional staff to operate the vehicle. The particulars were worked out quickly and the vehicle has now been ordered. The ultra-heavy duty vehicle production time is approximately 11-12 months.

The Library system should take delivery of the new vehicle in May or June 2019.

The new vehicle and staff will be housed at the Hilton Head Branch Library and will service approximately 40 stops in the Hilton Head and Bluffton areas. The vehicle holds approximately 2,500 books, audiobooks, DVDs and other library items for all ages and will serve both children and adults.

Purchasing this vehicle is simply the most cost-effective way to expand library services to underserved areas of Beaufort County without building a new library facility.

This partnership between the Beaufort County Library System, Beaufort County Administration, Beaufort County Council, and the Friends of the Hilton Head Library exemplifies the best community engagement possible.

The Hilton Head Branch is excited to host two events on April 5th to celebrate National Poetry Month for 2018. The Pat Conroy Literary center will be joining us at 2pm for "Pat Conroy's Great Love of Poetry" during which Tim Conroy, Pat's brother, will "explore Pat’s lifelong relationship with poetry as a reader, as a self-described failed poet, and as a writer who found a creative outlet for the rhapsody and rhythms of poetry in his iconic lyrical and descriptive prose." Come back at 6pm for the 5th Annual Poetry Month reading which is sure to be a treat! This event highlights eight local poets who you will not want to miss and one is even bringing his guitar! Both events are free to the public.

Civil War and Reconstruction-era Stereoscope Collections Now Available

The two collections are available for viewing in the Lowcountry Digital Library:

Civil War and Reconstruction Era Stereoscope Photographs of the Port Royal Region

This collection of 106 Civil War period photographic stereopticon cards of the Beaufort area, St. Augustine, Florida, and Charleston are primarily from the Samuel A. Cooley studio. This collection was purchased from New Hampshire based collector, Stephen J. Edwards. There are a number of scenes depicting the homes and life of the freedmen, a rarity. Dr. Stephen Wise, the Parris Island Museum Director verified the authenticity of the images, noted how unusual it was to find an entire collection of local interest together, and introduced the images to the public on 7 December 1997 in a formal library program attended by 100 members of the community. Beaufort County Library Trustee funds and donations from the Friends of the Beaufort County Library and Beaufort County Historical Society secured the purchase of the images in November 1997.

L.A. Hall Collection of Mid-Century Stereoscopic Images

L.A. Hall, Beaufort's postmaster, gave the Beaufort Township Library a collection of 36 stereopticon views of Beaufort taken "right after the War between the States" that he had received "from a friend in the north." Twenty-six of the images were taken in Beaufort by photographer E.W. Sinclair who worked for Samuel A. Cooley, self-described "Photographer, 10th Army Corps" during the Civil War and early Reconstruction periods. According to the Beaufort Times June 21, 1944, "The pictures are most interesting, including those homes which were used as hospitals, the old Magnolia hotel, which is no more, and many of the homes which still exist."

The stereopticon card "Cotton picking at the Yard - St. Helena Island Fall of 1879" was donated by a Mrs. Evans though the date of her donation is unknown.

On Wednesday, February 28th, the Lobeco Branch Library will show the Street Art Film, Changing the World, One Wall at a Time, on Education Apartheid in Iran Against Baha’i Minority, to Premiere at Harlem International Film Festival.

From Changing the World website:

Los Angeles, CA — April 26, 2017 — Changing the World, One Wall at a Time, a documentary feature film on Education Is Not A Crime – the world’s largest street art and human rights campaign, which raises awareness about education apartheid by Iran’s government against tens of thousands of Baha’is in the country – will premiere at the Harlem International Film Festival in New York City in May. The film was produced by Iranian-Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari as part of the worldwide Education Is Not A Crime campaign.

The Baha’is, who believe in ideals such as the equality of men and women, peaceful non-violence, and universal education, have been persecuted by the Iranian government since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. As part of this persecution, the government bars Baha’is from teaching and studying at Iranian universities.

Education Is Not A Crime raises awareness of this discrimination. The campaign began in 2014 with Bahari’s documentary film To Light a Candle, which was screened in nearly 300 locations around the world, before expanding into a global street art project raising awareness about the Baha’is.

“Changing the World, One Wall at a Time, is the story of an ambitious campaign,” Bahari said. “We fought brutality with arts and creativity. The fact that we brought together so many artists – who did not know anything about the persecution of the Baha’is in Iran, and who then created amazing works of art all around the world – shows there is a willingness among people many different backgrounds to join such a struggle.”

Forty-one murals have been painted in US and international cities as part of the project: Atlanta, Cape Town, Delhi, London, Nashville, Sao Paulo, Sydney, with two-dozen in New York City. Nineteen of the New York murals were painted in the iconic Harlem neighborhood because of its long association with cultural innovation during the Harlem Renaissance and the 1960s Civil Rights movement.

Street artists and human rights activists teamed up to use art, social media and community outreach to build a new audience for their message of education equality in Iran.

Changing the World, One Wall at a Time features interviews with popular artists – such as Rone from Australia, Astro from France, Marthalicia Matarrita from New York, and Elle from Los Angeles – as well as activists with experience of the Civil Rights movement, the anti-Apartheid struggle in South Africa, and human rights work on behalf of Iranians of all backgrounds. Iranian Baha’is with personal experience of being denied their right to higher education also share their stories. The film is presented by Executive Producers Maziar Bahari and Saleem Vaillancourt.

The Beaufort County Library System Introduces Flipster®, a New Way to Access Digital Magazines

~ The One-Stop-Shop for Digital Magazines Allows Library Patrons to Browse the Latest Issues of the Most Sought After Magazines ~

Patrons of the Beaufort County Library system can now access their favorite digital magazines using Flipster® from EBSCO Information Services. Flipster is a next-generation magazine service that allows people to browse digital versions of the latest issues of popular magazines, courtesy of the library.

The Beaufort County Library has both Flipster and hardcopy versions of magazines such as People, Ebony, Southern Living, Consumer Reports Buying Guide, and Time so patrons have the option of accessing the content at the library or remotely. Magazines can be downloaded to Android™ phones and tablets, Apple® phones and tablets, and Kindle Fire tablets for offline reading anytime, anywhere.

Flipster offers an easy, browse-able reading experience. Users can browse magazines by category as well as perform searches for specific periodicals. The table of contents contains links for quick access to articles of interest and hotlinks within magazines are hyperlinked, opening in separate tabs when clicked. In addition, there is an option to zoom in and out for better readability.

On Thursday, February 1, 2018, Arrhythmia Alliance will conduct its first series of “Know Your Pulse” events at the Bluffton Branch Library beginning at 10:00 am. Fort Fremont Documentary Premiers

The untold story of our local historic landmark

Beaufort, SC – The Friends of Fort Fremont and the Beaufort County Library announce the public premier of a newly released documentary on the history of Fort Fremont and Beaufort’s role during the Spanish-American War. “Fort Fremont: The Last Bastion in the Defense of Port Royal Sound 1898 – 1912” will be shown at 4:00 p.m. on January 18, 2018 at the St. Helena Public Library.

Port Royal Sound with its deep natural harbor played a strategic military role in the history of the area since the Spanish arrived in the 16th century. Three hundred and fifty years later, Fort Fremont marked the final chapter of coastal fortifications on Port Royal Sound.

The newly released film documents how national and world events conspired to select the remote sea island of St. Helena as the location for one of the most sophisticated defense structures of its time. The Fort played a vital role in protecting the U.S. Naval Station at Parris Island which had a strategic dry dock and coaling station critical to the Atlantic naval fleet during the Spanish-American War. The Battleship USS Maine made one its last stops for provisions here on its way to Havana, Cuba, where the sinking of the Maine ignited the start of the war with Spain.

Using vintage video and photographs, this film documents how geography, technology, national security, and politics interacted to shape the fortunes of Beaufort during the Spanish-America War.

Historian and author, Dr. Larry Rowland said, “[Fort Fremont] is a magnificent artifact of an era—an era that has been neglected at the turn of the 20th century. It is a piece of history that is disappearing. The Friends of Fort Fremont and Beaufort County have preserved it for the use of the public as a memorial to that moment in history.”

Located on St. Helena Island, the Fort Fremont Preserve is a 15-acre passive park purchased by Beaufort County in 2004 through the Rural and Critical Lands Preservation Program and the Trust for Public Land. Fort Fremont is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

The Archaeological Legacy Institute has selected the documentary to be shown at Archeology Channel International Film Festival in Eugene, Or in May 2018.

Combahee Ferry Historic District Exhibit

Anyone who has driven from Beaufort to Charleston on US Hwy 17 has gone across a rich and multi-tiered archaeological site. Learn about the significance of the Combahee River crossing beginning with the Native Americans who camped along its banks, the lost town of Radnor, and the daring raid to free the enslaved led by Harriet Tubman and the 2nd US Colored Troops in 1863. The exhibit is on loan from the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

Helping to Preserve Hilton Head Island’s Biodiversity: The Benefits of Native Plants

Come hear about the ways using native plants in your landscape can help you save money, while at the same time helping our native wildlife to survive and thrive! Native plants have also evolved here in the Lowcountry, along with native predators, so many have built-in deterrents to being eaten by deer and other critters we consider pests. You will leave this presentation with a whole new respect for native plants and the critical functions they perform for all who share our island.

Sally Krebs received her BA and MS degrees in Zoology from Rutgers University and is a published biologist with a special interest in the ecology of reptiles and amphibians. From 1986-2011, she worked for the Planning Department, Town of Hilton Head Island, as Natural Resources Administrator, a job that included reviewing all development plans for environmental impacts and working with developers to improve natural resources protection on their sites, developing mitigation plans for sites damaged by development, and educating the general public on the importance of environmental protection. She also helped author comprehensive tree protection and wetland protection ordinances based on quantitative evaluation of environmental values and functions. Her current position with the Town is Sustainable Practices Coordinator, which includes educating the public on ways to live greener, more sustainable lives and the benefits of doing so. She is an arborist certified by the International Society of Arboriculture, serves on NOAA’s Marine Mammal Stranding Network and SCDNR’s Sea Turtle Stranding Network, and has been an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina Beaufort since 1988, where she teaches courses in Applied Environmental Science, Herpetology and Plant Biology.

All branches of the Beaufort County Library System will be closed in honor of Veterans Day on Friday, November 10th and Saturday, November 11th.

All branches will resume normal operating hours on Monday, November 13th.

A Reverence for Teaching: Pat Conroy as Student & Teacher

Jonathan Haupt will share stories of Conroy’s transformational years as a student at Beaufort High School and later as a teacher at BHS and on Daufuskie Island. This presentation includes audio and video clips, photographs, and both published and unpublished excerpts by and about Conroy (1945-2016), the best-selling author of a dozen novels and memoirs, including The Water Is Wide and The Prince of Tides. Program intended for all ages.

Jonathan Haupt is the executive director of the Pat Conroy Literary Center, the founding director of the annual Pat Conroy Literary Festival, and the former director of the University of South Carolina Press. He serves on the boards of South Carolina Academy of Authors, the Deckle Edge Literary Festival, and the Friends of South Carolina Libraries. He is co-editor with Nicole Seitz of the forthcoming anthology Our Prince of Scribes: Writers Remember Pat Conroy.
