Like libraries, museums, archives and other organizations throughout the world, the Beaufort District Collection works every day to preserve cultural history.
The Heritage Health Index Report (2005) uncovered some startling statistics. Over 4.8 billion artifacts are held in public trust by more than 30,000 archives, historical societies, libraries, museums, scientific research collections and archaeological repositories in the United States.
Why is preservation important? Some 2.6 billion items are not protected by an emergency plan such as natural disasters, and 1.3 billion of these items are at risk of being lost. If billions of items are at risk at our heritage institutions, than plausibly trillions of items held by the general public are at risk.
We want to help lessen that risk by sharing our expertise with you during Preservation Week. Registration is now open for the free BDC@ BDC “Taking Care of Your Family Treasures Workshop.” Register to learn basic practices and techniques to safeguard your family heirlooms from accelerated decay. Grace Cordial and Charmaine Concepcion, BDC Staff, are the instructors. The workshop will be held Saturday, April 27th, 1 – 3 pm. Registration closes when full or at 4:30pm on April 25th (whichever comes first.) Registration is required. No walk-ins. Call Charmaine at 843-255-6468 or e-mail her at email@example.com to register. This workshop will be held in the Beaufort District Collection, 2nd Floor, 311 Scott Street, Beaufort.
