A Department of Beaufort County Government
Although the major focus of the Beaufort District Collection is on the history, culture, and environment of our area, we provide limited assistance to customers whose primary interest is in tracking their family history.
Occasionally, we do talks on South Carolina genealogical topics. For example, on December 7, 2010, staff presented a session on "Federal Censuses, 1840 - 1910," for the Beaufort Chapter, South Carolina Genealogy Society. Contact us for the PDF or WORD version of the presentation.
We also teach a basic how-to-do genealogical class from time to time. You may recall that Charmaine did an basic introduction to African-American genealogy in the Hilton Head Branch Library in February to help celebrate Black History Month 2011.
The next BDC staff introduction to the basic process of genealogical research and how to use the Ancestry Library Edition database to discover your ancestors will be Sunday, May 15th in the Bluffton Branch Library . Call 255-6503 to register. Space is limited. Advance registration is required.
If you'll be working in ALE - and have a South Carolina focus - then the BDC is the place to be. Contact us to arrange for a one-to-one consultation. We're always happy to recommend resources and guidance on how to approach knocking down the proverbial genealogical brick wall! The best way to get our undivided attention is to contact us in advance and set up an appointment.
Please note: For other types of research (business, literature, biographical, for school or college, etc.), our colleagues at the branch libraries are in a better position to help you. Contact the Branch Library of your choice.
