Storm of 1893 Death List

An out-of-state researcher asked about the names of people who died during the 1893 hurricane to confirm oral tradition of family deaths caused by our local natural disaster. Given that the total casualty number ranges from 1000 to 5000 dead depending on the source, no one will ever really know exactly how many and who perished. What we can know, based upon local primary documents, is that the Beaufort County Coroner's Office held an unprecedented - and as yet unreplicated - number of inquests over the course of three days to determine the cause of death of almost 300 bodies discovered in the aftermath of the hurricane. Using Coroner's Inquisition Records that we have on microfilm, I compiled a list of the 294 people who are known to have died in Beaufort County as a direct result of the Great Sea Island Storm. As to be expected, the largest number of determinations gave "accidental drowning" as the cause of death. Rather unexpectedly, the second most cause of death was death by "fallen house."
