One County Reads the Civil War: Events for Youth

Secret codes and messages played an important role in the Civil War. We’ll learn about those used during the war, and hear amazing stories about some of the bravest spies be-fore we try to solve some codes of our own.

THE SECRET QUILT

Creative quilt makers designed patterns that contained messages and directions that slaves used to help them reach freedom along the Underground Railroad. Hear the story of The Patchwork Path and we’ll complete paper quilt squares using the same designs and patterns.

As part of the One County Reads the Civil War series,
we are hosting an after-hours teen scavenger hunt at the library. Search for answers among Civil War clues and compete for prizes. Junk food will be provided.

Kids and teenagers, pets, and even girls played important and heroic roles in the Civil War. We’ll learn about their courageous accomplishments and the lasting effect that they have on us today.
