For a number of years, Family Tree Magazine has been searching the internet for the best genealogy websites. In 2010, they highlighted free sites. In 2011, they've compiled a list of the 101 best, including both free and premium sites.

Pay attention to the individual entry for each website because "though some mostly free sites charge for premium services, you’ll see a symbol only next to sites where you have to pony up for the core content." So, it's a mixed bag of pay-to-view, pay-to-view some, and pay-to-view everything.

It's gratifying to know that folks actually read Connections entries. Just yesterday, Margaret Ely of the Public Broadcasting Service sent me a personal e-mail. She wrote: I wanted to thank you for sharing the trailer for the POV film, “Biblioburro: The Donkey Library.” The entire documentary is now available for embedding, for a limited time. Please feel free to share this video with your readers, too.

Our fiscal year has just ended. We'd like to give a shout-out of deep gratitude to all the BDC@ The Branches local history program series presenters who donated their time to "Bring the Past" to the present and into the future.

When a section of the library system has only two people working in it, and one of those people is not available to work (for family, vacation, or medical reasons), we cannot tag-team lunchtimes as is our customary practice. Therefore, once again the Research Room must close Noon to 1:00pm to comply with Federal Labor laws. Due to a temporary staff shortage, the lunchtime Research Room closures will continue from July 5th through July 12th.

Libraries, and the people who work in libraries, are undergoing significant cultural and budgetary stresses. Library Journal conducted a "Job Satisfaction Survey" that might be of interest to some readers. On the whole, librarians enjoy their jobs but there are significant drawbacks to working within the profession that are taking a mounting negative toll on physical, mental, and financial well-being of its workers.

The Nation’s Report Card: U.S. History 2010 was released June 14th. There has been a little improvement in the overall scores since the program began in 1994, with the lowest performing 4th graders improving the most. Unfortunately, though, 55% of high school seniors still do not meet the "Basic" level of understanding our nation's history.
