Because today is Halloween, and a little fun is in order, I'd like to share a reference question I got about 5 to 7 years ago. Neither the name of the customer nor the name of the plantation involved will be revealed. The circumstances are intentionally left vague to protect the identity of the library customer.

To celebrate Archives Month in great style, we offered a number of tours to our new Research Room in the waning days of September to October 23rd.

Documents can change a nation and/or documents can change a person's nation as in the case of the naturalization process in the United States. According to the National Archives web pages on Naturalization, "Naturalization is the process by which an alien becomes an American citizen. It is a voluntary act; naturalization is not required. Of the foreign-born persons listed on the 1890 through 1930 censuses, 25 percent had not become naturalized or filed their "first papers."

The Council of State Archivists have put a slideshow on the internet of state Archives Month posters for this year's celebration of all things archival. Click here to be surprised by the array of state themes, design styles, and scope of archival holdings available for us to see, explore, and research.

The Alien Registration Act (also known as the Smith Act) passed by Congress on 29 June 1940 made it illegal for anyone in the United States to advocate, abet, or teach the desirability of overthrowing the government.

I wasn't the only person to have the idea for honoring Archives Month with 31 blog entries during October. The Smithsonian Institution Archives did too. (I am in great - and am humbled by the - company.)

On Thursday, Oct. 21st, the SIA held a Facebook preservation Q&A session. Here's a question that I've gotten in the past which the true preservation experts at SIA answered. You may find this information quite helpful when working with your own family photographs.

National Friends of the Library Week is October 17 - 23.

Beaufort County Council proclaimed October 17 - 23 "Beaufort County Friends of the Library Week," on Oct. 11th along with its proclamation of the month of October as "Archaeology Month." (Public governing bodies seem to like proclaiming, don't they? Oye! Oye!)

BDC @ The Branches celebrates Archaeology Month in Bluffton Branch on Tues., Oct. 19th.

We must comply with Federal labor laws regarding lunch and break periods. Because we are a very lean crew of two, sometimes we have to shut down the Research Room at lunchtime. A few of those dates occur this month. (I've been telling everyone that October is a very, very busy month!)

Accordingly, the BDC Research Room will be closed from Noon until 1 pm on Thursday, Oct. 14th, Friday, Oct. 15th, Monday, Oct. 18th, and Tuesday, Oct. 19th.

In honor of South Carolina Archives Month, we have a small display of corresponding to this year's theme "Documents Can Change a Nation."
